The Role of Vitamins and Other Nutritional Supplements in the Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy
The
Role of Vitamins and Other Nutritional Supplements in the Treatment of
Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral
neuropathy is a complex process in which the nerves of feet and leg become
damaged.Less commonly, neuropathy can affect the hands as well. As of yet, there is no specific cure for this
condition. Recent research, however, has led to some important breakthroughs in
its foot pain treatment.
Certain
vitamins and nutritional supplements can be helpful in easing symptoms and also
may be helpful in arresting the progression of the condition.
Metanx
Recently
a new dietary supplement called Metanx™ was introduced that is proving to be
very effective in treating peripheral neuropathy. A main component of Metanx is L-methylfolate,
an active form of folic acid. Folic acid
in this active state has been shown to increase Nitric Oxide production. Higher levels of Nitric Oxide in the blood
stream have been shown to aid in increasing circulation to the nerves. A number
of case studies have shown that Metanx has been helpful in restoring sensation
and also reducing the burning sensations that are often associated with
peripheral neuropathy.
Vitamin
B Complex
Other
important vitamins and supplements in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy
include vitamin B6 and B12. It has been scientifically proven that vitamin B12
deficiency can cause symptoms of peripheral neuropathy with axonal loss.
Alpha-Lipoic
Acid
Alpha-Lipoic
Acid is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to prevent nerve dysfunction
in experimental diabetic trials.
Acetyl
L-Carnitine
Acetyl
L-Carnitine has shown to have beneficial results in the treatment and
prevention of peripheral neuropathy symptoms.
Evening
Primrose Oil
Evening
Primrose oil is an excellent source of essential fatty acids including a high
level of Gamma-Linolenic Acid.
The
use of the aforementioned vitamins and supplements represents a positive
approach in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy. They
are especially valuable as they have few if any side effects—as compared to
many other oral medications, which are often associated with a significant
number of them.
It
is estimated that 20 million people in our country suffer from peripheral neuropathy.
New treatments are constantly being developed. Check back here for updates on
