I have read a lot about baby sign language, but have never really seen anyone use it. I saw it in one of the Meet The Parents movies, but other than that, it seems to be something other people do. I have to admit the idea is great, but does it work with all children? I wonder if it might delay speech, though I would guess maybe not. If it did, perhaps only for a short time and most parents might not know the difference. If there has been anyone that has noticed a significant delay, I have not read about it or heard about it anywhere as of yet.

Baby sign language is definitely more popular today if you go by the news and the articles there are out there. Even though I don’t personally know anyone who uses it, that doesn’t mean many aren’t doing so. I remember back to when my little girl was a baby, and I think how it might have been a little easier on me if I had known what was wrong.

Before speech, baby sign language is supposed to help them communicate what is wrong or what they need. It’s an interesting idea. If you want to know more about baby sign language, you can find books and DVDs on the subject. It may be rather simple to teach, though I have no idea. I would imagine if you limited the amount of baby sign language you use to a few important ideas, it might go rather smoothly and your baby may learn to communicate with you rather quickly.

If you want to get really complicated, however, you may easily confuse your baby, and yourself. Look for the simplest guide you can find, and try to limit the signs you want to learn to the very basics at first. If you know family that uses baby sign language, you may want to talk to them when you endeavor to use it with your baby. They have already g
one through the learning process, so they may be able to tell you what works and what doesn’t work, and they may have tips for you as well. There are different ways to go about teaching just about anything, and baby sign language is no exception. Consider your child’s temperament and age when teaching them, and remember to have as much patience as you can muster.
